The Curies discovered radium and deemed it a wonder drug. Girls were offered golden opportunities to work in the factories. This was such a bright light during the otherwise very dark years of the First World War. Then, the girls working in the factories began to fall ill in droves. The company denied all wrong doing, but the situation soon spiraled into one of the biggest scandals of the early 20th century.
